Description
Spanish bayonet. An evergreen shrub with sword-like tough leaves and impressive flower spikes from the Southern USA, growing to 1 m high – flowers more. The tough leaves can be used for basketry and to make a fibre, also split and used as twine. The roots are a source of a soap substitute, and edible parts include the flowers, flower stalks and fruits, needs a very well drained soil and sun; hardy to -15°C or so.
