Chinese wisteria. A vigorous climbing (twining) plant from China, growing to 10 m (33 ft) high or more – half that in 10 years. A nitrogen-fixing plant which acts as a green manure shrub. The flowers are edible (usually cooked) and seeds have been eaten but are not recommended – they are used medicinally. A fibre, paper and cloth can be made from the bark. Used as a screening vine and facade insulation; bees love the flowers. Needs a warm sunny site and well-drained soil; hardy to -20°C. Stratification: SC. Number of seeds: 4.
