It bears large clusters of bright red fruits which are edible when cooked (they are mildly poisonous raw) – used as a cranberry substitute. The fruits and bark are used medicinally, and the fruits as a food colouring. A good hedging and bee plant. Likes a moist site in sun, part shade or quite deep shade; hardy to -35°C.
