Buffalo berry. A medium or large thorny shrub from N.America, growing 3-6 m (10-20 ft) high (to 4 m in 10 years). An excellent nitrogen-fixing species. The scarlet fruits are edible raw (if bletted or frosted) or cooked, with a sweet-acid flavour. Very good in hedges and windbreaks; also a bee plant. Dioecious; likes full sun or part shade and a well-drained soil; hardy to -40°C. Stratification: CS13. Number of seeds: 20.
