Monterey pine. Large. fast-growing evergreen tree from California, growing to 35 m (120 ft) or more there – 10 m (33 ft) in 10 years. A major forestry and agroforestry tree (the latter in New Zealand), with the timber being used for all construction purposes etc. Also used as a sand dune stabiliser and source of resin. Likes sun and a light acid soil – prefers the South and West of Britain; hardy to -15°C. Stratification: CS4. Number of seeds: 20.
