Chinese mallow. Short-lived perennial or annual, but one which self-seeds readily even in shady conditions. Grows about 1.5 m (5 ft) high in sun or shade. It has excellent edible leaves – which can be very large, up to 30 cm (1 ft) across – with a mild flavour and good texture: an excellent salad plant. Long cultivated for its leaves. Crispa is a form which has wavy edged leaves. The seeds and roots are medicinal and dyes are made from the plant. Grow in any soil in sun or part shade; hardy to -20°C. Stratification: ND.
