The young leaves, stems, flowers and seeds are all edible when cooked, and the leaves are used as a tea substitute. Roots and leaves are used medicinally. Esteemed as a fodder plant (fresh or made into hay) and a good bee plant. Widely used for soil conservation and its wildlife value. Likes a well-drained soil in full sun; hardy to -23°C.
