Witch hazel. A large North American shrub from forest understories, growing to 5 m (16 ft) high, 30 cm per year. Bright yellow flowers open in the autumn as the leaves fall. The oily seeds are edible, but the plant is best known for its medicinal leaves and inner bark. Branches are used as diviner’s rods. Likes a moist, slightly acid soil and sun or part shade; hardy to -35°C. Stratification: CS34. Number of seeds: 10.
