The Chinese toon is a well known and highly valued perennial vegetable in many parts of southern and south eastern Asia, yet its edible qualities are hardly known elsewhere, where this tree is usually only grown as an ornamental.
Toona sinensis (formerly Cedrela sinensis) has several common names including Chinese cedar, Chinese mahogany, red toon and of course the Chinese toon. The vegetable itself is usually just called toon.
