Redbud. A North American round-headed tree to 14m (45 ft) high, preferring a neutral or alkaline soil and part or full shade. A legume, however not now believed to fix nitrogen. The flowers are edible raw (nice in salads), the buds pickled or cooked, and the young pods cooked. Source of nectar & pollen for honey bees in April and May. Hardy to about -25°C. Stratification: SC+CS8. Number of seeds: 50.
