The large fruits are edible, being sweet with a hint of pine in the flavour; they are produced abundantly and regularly in Britain, even in shade. The plum yews thrive in shade (even dense shade) beneath other trees and are ideal understorey crops. The large oily seeds of this species may be edible. Dioecious, so both sexes of plant must be grown for fruit; growth 2m (7 ft) in 10 years. The leaves have long been used in China for their anti-cancer properties. Hardy to -15°C.
