Online Forest Garden Greenhouse course

Are you interested in making a subtropical forest garden inside a greenhouse?

A forest garden greenhouse is a protected growing system, using the soil as a heat storage medium, to create a subtropical to tropical climate to grow tender crops. Since we built our own forest garden greenhouse there has been a lot of interest from folk wanting to build their own. Parts of this course may also be suitable for people interested in forest gardening in a subtropical climate.

Forest garden greenhouse systems have been around for some years, on varying scales from 10 sq metres upwards. They entail building a special soil heat storage/release system (often called a climate battery) underneath a greenhouse structure.

The principles of the ‘climate battery’ system, air flow systems etc. are just the same, whatever the scale you are considering.

This online course explains the principles of a forest garden greenhouse, how to choose a site, how to design and install the climate battery, how to integrate water use and mnoitoring systems, and how to choose the plants.

What does this course consist of? There are 7 online course episodes with accompanying pdf notes. They can be purchased individually or all together as a complete course.

Episode 1: Concept, sites and structures

Description

We explain what a forest garden greenhouse is, and how a climate battery system can store heat from the summer and autumn to use to heat the air in winter. Siting your structure and types of greenhouse structures are also discussed.

Price: £15

Episode 2: Designing the climate battery

Description

The climate battery system is what stores summer heat to use to heat the air in winter and means you don’t have to use any (or very little) extra heat to keep the system frost-free. Designing this is a critical part of a forest garden greenhouse project.

Price: £15

Episode 3: Installing the climate battery

Description

Here we describe how to physically install the climate battery system, with many tips to help avoid mistakes during this groundworks phase of the build.

Price: £15

Episode 4: Other design considerations

Description

This video cover options for access, ventilation – what windows and other vents are needed – insulation options both all year and for winter only, and the possibilities of aquaculture within the greenhouse.

Price: £15

Episode 5: Water, monitoring and automation

Description

Here we cover how to store water and what the best options are for irrigating – overhead spray, drip irrigation or trickle irrigation? Also how to monitor climate conditions inside and how to automate functions such as the climate battery fans and window vents.

Price: £15

Episode 6: Choosing trees

Description

There is huge list of potential warm temperate, subtropical and tropical trees to choose for your greenhouse. Here we help you narrow it down to species more likey to succeed, surviving cool winter temperatures and with good productivity.

Price: £15

Episode 7: Choosing shrubs and lower plants

Description

The shrubs and lower perennial layers in a forest garden greenhouse offer opportuntities for growing fruits, vegetables, spices etc. We offer good advice about what is likely to work and do well for you.
