The loquat or Japanese medlar is indigenous to south eastern China and has been naturalised in Japan for a long time, where it has been cultivated for over a thousand years. It is also widely grown in Mediterranean regions, where it is known as the Nispero. It is a small evergreen tree or shrub adapted to a subtropical or mild temperate climate which bears fruits with a succulent tangy flesh.
